Saving water is as crucial as cutting carbon

A Carrickfergus school is using wind power to reduce its energy costs and carbon emissions.
Ulidia Integrated College is the latest school to opt to generate its own electricity, with a new 5kW turbine expected to supply up to 9,000 units per year, cutting energy bills by about £1,000.

The school will also be paid for Renewable Obligation Certificates.

Principal Eugene Martin explained: “We felt that it was extremely important to set an example to our pupils and the local community by embracing a renewable ‘clean’ energy.

“Our school is ideally suited to a wind turbine and it was very easy to construct. We will also install a display highlighting the amount of electricity being generated and the amount of CO2 saved.”

Ulidia is implementing a range of energy and water saving measures, works to promote recycling and has established an ‘Eco club’ for pupils as it works to secure Green Flag Eco School status.

At present, students are working to create an eco-friendly Christmas tree and decorations from recycled materials.

The wind turbine, which has been erected next to the playing fields, is part funded by Northern Ireland Electricity’s Smart programme and the Low Carbon Buildings programme. NIE’s Jenny Boyd has paid a visit to see the turbine in action.

“Carrick people have always embraced energy saving technologies and I’m pleased to see Ulidia Integrated College is one of the first schools in Northern Ireland to install a wind turbine as part of NIE’s Wind for Schools initiative,” she commented.

“Northern Ireland has great potential for wind generation and the very visible turbine at Ulidia College is a great reminder to pupils, teachers and parents that we all have a part to play in safeguarding our environmental future.”

The Smart programme has assisted with the installation of photovoltaic solar panels and renewable energy lighting at 40 schools across Northern Ireland.
